Can Lessons From The Slow Food Movement Fuel Slow Fashion?

Grocery stores, restaurants and coffee shops have wholeheartedly embraced the slow food movement, with phrases such as “certified organic,” “fair-trade” and “all-natural” plastered across product packaging and menus. They all can deliver a similar message of high quality.

The slow fashion movement is following a comparable path forward, with brands promoting long-lasting materials and educating consumers around end-of-life uses for garments, such as recycling or upcycling. Still, slow fashion has seemingly been progressing less quickly than its food counterpart and it’s up to the apparel industry — and all segments of the supply chain — to accelerate its pace of change.

Fast Fashion: Inside The Fight To End The Silence On Waste

At a time when our waste and our environmental impact is firmly under the spotlight, news in early July that fashion brand Burberry had burned almost £30m ($40m) of stock has caused outrage.

The BBC contacted 35 high-end designers and high-street retailers to ask about their practice. Only six replied with breakdowns or further information, and the rest said they could not help or did not respond at all.

After more than 1,100 people died in a garment factory collapse in Bangladesh five years ago, pressure has also mounted on western retailers to be transparent about their supply chain. While our passion for fashion is at least part of the problem, experts say the industry itself needs to be smarter with production to lessen environmental damage.

People Are Buying Clothes To Take Instagram Pictures, And Then Returning Them

In an effort to appear fashionable, middle-aged shoppers are purchasing clothes online, only to return them a day later – after they’ve captured the perfect shot for Instagram.

Transforming the “outfit of the day” phenomenon into a literal shopping experience, research from Barclaycard found that almost one in 10 UK shoppers has bought clothes online with the intent to wear them for social media and then return their temporary wardrobe.
